NEW MUSIC: Nas ft. Amy Winehouse “Cherry Wine”
With a new album slated for July 17th, Nas has some heavyweights featured on Life is Good. But one very notable feature comes from the late Amy Winehouse.
Winehouse idolized the rapper. (Back to Black track “Me & Mr. Jones” was a tribute to her fandom.) And the pair became friends and occasional collaborators before her death last July. (Another duet, “Like Smoke,” appeared on her posthumously released collection, Lioness: Hidden Treasures.)
Like “Smoke,” “Cherry Wine” spilled out during a 2008 recording session with Salaam Remi, a producer who’d worked with Winehouse on both her albums, Frank and Back to Black.
Talking to NME about the genesis of the smooth and shuffling song, Nas said “Cherry Wine” came from “God and Amy,” and went on to set the scene of their time together in ’08. “Salaam worked on her last album, and they were working. We don’t even have an explanation for how it happened. It was just magic. It just happened. It was supposed to happen. She made it happen.”
